Ten kilometres, and you still climb the checkered bastard like everybody else. It’s still a fast morning.
You head south down Ocean Drive, drop into Big Swamp Wildlife Reserve for a full lap of it — a bird sanctuary a kilometre from the middle of town, and the quietest place you will run all weekend — then come back out onto Ocean Drive. From there it follows The Three: up over Marlston Hill to the lighthouse, down the zig-zag, out to the Mosaic, and back to the finish. No traffic, closed road on the way home.
It is also the most common first step into the event, and the reason people move up. You get the hill, the zig-zag and the turn at the Mosaic — the same three things the half gives you — in a distance you can do on ordinary training. Plenty of the marathon field started here.
